The competition

La Liga has 20 clubs and 38 rounds from August to May, with the bottom three relegated to the Segunda División. One rule sets it apart from England: clubs level on points are separated first by their head-to-head results, not by goal difference, so a single meeting between two rivals can be worth more than its three points.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have won the large majority of titles, with Atlético Madrid the club that has broken their hold most recently. Below them, the places for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League are usually decided in the last few rounds.

Spanish football tends to be patient in possession, and the gap between a team's xG and its goals can stay open for weeks. The previews compare both, and look at how each side has done against the top half of the table rather than the season average alone.
