The competition

Liga I has 16 clubs and is played in two stages. After a regular season of home and away games, the top six go into a championship play-off and the other ten into a play-out. Points are halved when the second stage begins, so a lead built over the autumn can disappear quickly in the spring.

FCSB, the club formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, hold the record for titles, ahead of Dinamo Bucharest. CFR Cluj dominated from the late 2000s, winning several titles in a row, and Universitatea Craiova, Rapid and Farul Constanța have also challenged at the top in recent years.

The halving of points makes the regular season about reaching the top six as much as finishing first. The previews look at form over the last eight games and at each side's record against the other play-off contenders, which tells more than the overall table.
