The competition
The Premier League has 20 clubs who play each other home and away, 38 matchdays from August to May. Three points for a win, one for a draw; level clubs are separated by goal difference, then goals scored. The bottom three are relegated to the Championship and replaced by its top two and the winner of its play-off final.
The top of the table leads into the Champions League, and the places just below it into the Europa League and Conference League, with the exact number depending on cup winners and UEFA's coefficient. That is why the race for fourth or fifth can matter as much in April as the title itself.
Since the league began in 1992, Manchester United have won it more often than anyone, while recent seasons have been shaped by Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. The schedule is dense, especially over Christmas, and clubs in Europe often rotate; the previews look at the last eight games in all competitions, not only league form.
