The competition
Serie A has 20 clubs and 38 rounds from August to May; the bottom three go down to Serie B. Clubs level on points are separated first by their head-to-head record, and since 2022-23 a tie for the title or for the last place above the drop is settled by a one-off play-off match.
Juventus hold the record for titles by a distance, but the last few seasons have seen the Scudetto go to Inter, Milan and Napoli. The fight for the Champions League places is often the tightest race in the table, with four or five clubs within a few points into the spring.
Italian games are often decided by small margins: many teams defend deep and wait for transitions, which keeps xG totals low on both sides. The previews look at chances allowed as closely as chances created, and at how each side has done against teams of a similar level.
